The interdisciplinary dialogue between the members of Die Junge Akademie takes place in German. This is by no means a matter of course. Many of the members publish new research findings in English, deal with specialised texts in other languages or mainly use formulas and codes. For many of them, German is not their first language, but Serbian, Arabic or Polish, for example. Many members are always afraid that they do not know the language rules of academic discourse well enough or find it difficult to verbalise complicated trains of thought.

Everyday academic and artistic life is characterised by countless translation movements that often remain invisible: Translations between everyday and specialised language, between creative idea and verbal explanation, between first and second language, between subject and research language, between German and English. This language work usually takes place more or less secretly: It is common to perceive accents and dialect inflections, grammatical errors, violations of idiomatic language usage and explanatory difficulties as deficits.

But isn't there more to it than that? As part of the workshop programme linked to the writing lab, the aim is to consciously take a different look at constant language work. The aim is to explore how much cognitive potential it harbours.

    • Summer Academy: "Resistant and Interdisciplinary – Ethnography as Epistemic Practice"

Ethnographic research has now found its way into many disciplines – and yet its epistemological premises, political implications and potential for resistance are often given too little consideration. The Summer Academy provides a forum for discussing ethnography as a contested epistemological practice within various disciplinary contexts.
