Die Junge Akademie mourns the loss of sociologist and former Chair of the board of Die Junge Akademie, Prof Dr Matthias Koenig. He passed away on 12 January 2026.

Die Junge Akademie was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of its alumnus Prof Dr Matthias Koenig.

Matthias Koenig was a member of Die Junge Akademie from 2005 to 2010 and its Chair of the Board from 2007 to 2008. In this role, he helped shape the work of Die Junge Akademie during a formative phase and represented it both internally and externally.

At Die Junge Akademie, Matthias Koenig was involved in the working groups on "Boundaries", "Evolution", "Renaissance of the Religious?" and "Human Rights", among others. Members and staff remember him as a thoughtful and attentive colleague who had a lasting impact on the work of Die Junge Akademie with his calm and engaging manner.

Matthias Koenig held a chair in Empirical macrosociology at the Max Weber Institute at Heidelberg University and was Vice-President of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, German Research Foundation) until the end of December 2025. His scientific and institutional work extended far beyond Die Junge Akademie.

The members and staff of Die Junge Akademie mourn the loss of Matthias Koenig and express their deepest sympathy to his family, friends and colleagues.
