What do worn buttons and switches tell us about how we use technology and how we feel about it? How does a relic become an expression and focal point of a believer's emotional life? Why does the red button that sets a museum exhibit in motion trigger excitement, joy and curiosity? Which objects and devices regulate and shape physical contact in medical contexts? And how do physical co-presence and physical involvement differ from digital situations of contact? Exploring these questions leads to the material and affective practice of touching and being touched, which members of Die Junge Akademie want to explore in this workshop using empirical examples from different times and fields. They examine how the haptic practice of touching and being touched is involved in emotional practices, how touch contributes to processes of embodiment, shapes material culture, is shaped by it, and significantly constitutes coexistence and the underlying systems of knowledge and meaning.
