Two installations featuring membranes that contract and expand, evoking human and non-human folds. The starting point for this collaborative artistic project is an exploration of the “somatics of the fold”, from Gilles Deleuze’s philosophical stratifications of matter and his ideas of folded time and bodies, through the anatomy of skin surfaces and intestinal walls, to the haptic qualities of contracting robots in the field of soft robotics. In vocal fold tension mismatch, the fold becomes a fleeting pattern of uneven tension that you can experience physically.

In the display case, a latex skin performs an autonomous choreography of folding. The membrane expands until it touches the glass, crumpling and curving into complex patterns upon contact. The resistance of the outer boundary gives rise to the folding, which here becomes the existential condition of every movement.

On a historic bed in the historical ward, a latex sheet folds and unfolds like living tissue, inviting you to experience folding through touch. The bed becomes a site of sound where past and present, the human and the non-human, come into contact and fold into one another.

The movement of the latex surface and the sound form a feedback loop: the folding process alters the sound, which in turn triggers the movement of the surface. In the crumpled landscapes of the latex skin, the sound, which morphs in real time, and the movement logic of soft robotics intertwine.

The resulting vibrations are transmitted to the body via chin rests mounted on stools. When you lean forward and place your chin on the rest, you hear the sound not through the ear, but through bone conduction: the vibrations travel through the jaw and skull to the cochlea, the spiral-shaped structure in the inner ear. The folding is heard from within. The whisper of a skin-like surface thus becomes physically perceptible.

vocal fold tension mismatch invites you to listen to the folding of the skin from within.

Lea Luka Sikau

Dr. Lea Luka Sikau is a media artist, mezzo-soprano, musicologist, and curator working at the intersection of music theatre and multisensory media art. Her PhD at Cambridge examined posthuman futures in opera rehearsals. She has been a Fellow at Harvard and a visiting researcher at MIT, and has received awards including the Bavarian Culture Prize. Internationally, she teaches on AI, artistic research, and multisensory environments. She has collaborated with renowned artists and founded the media art duo sikau/půbalová. As Head Curator for Sound at ZKM, she oversees festivals, residencies, and the Klangdom, including international collaborations and new performance formats. Profile page Lea Luka Sikau

Denisa Půbalová

Denisa Půbalová is an artist, researcher, and creative coder working within the artistic duo sikau/půbalová. She holds MA degrees from Charles University and the University of West Bohemia and will begin her PhD at Utrecht University in 2026. Her process-based work develops multisensory methods of attunement to socio-ecological incommensurability, including human-fungi-technology entanglements, diatom-climate archives, and gut-soil microbiomes. Situated at the intersection of posthuman philosophy, environmental humanities, speculative fiction, and collaborative fieldwork, she creates installations, publications, and participatory tools that invite bodily, material, and more-than-human forms of knowing. denisapubalova.com

Amos Peled

Amos Peled is a multidisciplinary artist and graduate of the ArtScience master's programme in The Hague. His work repurposes medical technologies to explore the relationships between humans, machines, and healthcare systems. Using medical imaging devices such as ultrasound, he develops performative and audiovisual works that investigate patient agency, body politics, speculative organs, and embodied technological performance. Through artistic research in hospital contexts, he opens new perspectives on the body as a place where medical technologies, institutional structures, and lived experience intersect. www.amospeled.net

Denis Połeć

Denis Połeć is a Hamburg-based multimedia artist and composer working across sound, performance, installation, music theatre, and digital media. He studied Media Art and Design at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar and Multimedia Composition at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hamburg. Combining custom-built software, video, interactive systems, and compositional methods, his practice examines how technological structures shape perception, behaviour, and human agency. Through audiovisual compositions, spatial sound installations, and interdisciplinary collaborations in contemporary music and experimental theatre, he develops performative systems that explore how technology, perception, and human behaviour interact with one another. denispolec.de
