Research Group "Translational Radiobiology"
Uniklinikum Erlangen

The Translational Radiobiology Group at the Uniklinikum Erlangen is working on the development of new treatment strategies for cancer. Basic research and clinical studies help the team to better understand the changes in the immune system during radiation therapy for cancer patients. The large interdisciplinary team follows a cascade mentoring model in which responsibility and supervision are passed on step by step and each career stage is both promoted and continuously supported. The Translational Radiobiology Group has already accompanied over 140 young scientists on their journey.
Strengths of the research environment
-
Career support with personalised guidance
Women pursuing a habilitation within the AriadneMed programme can, if they wish, receive individual external mentoring on topics such as work-life balance, equality and strategic career planning. -
Strong support structures in the early stages of a career
The Interdisciplinary Centre for Clinical Research, a large research training group and the Graduate School promote academic exchange, soft skills and networking among PhD students and postdocs. -
Early visibility and active involvement
Staff members are encouraged to get involved in professional societies, organise symposia, take on chairing roles and participate in appointment committees. -
Family-friendly and flexible
Flexible working hours, childcare places and services provided by the Dual Career Service support the balance between research, family and relationships. -
Open feedback and a culture of learning from mistakes
Weekly team meetings and monthly discussions, in which projects with negative outcomes are also deliberately presented, promote transparency, shared learning and new perspectives. -
Mentoring and community in everyday life
A tiered mentoring system – where postdocs mentor PhD students, who in turn mentor undergraduates – strengthens cohesion, whilst successes such as publications or completed theses are celebrated together over coffee and cake.
Examples
-
Support during the early stages of a career
The research environment includes six postdoctoral researchers who are working towards their habilitation. This high concentration of training positions demonstrates that career paths here are not merely theoretical, but are actively pursued and supported. -
Trust in researchers’ personal responsibility
The postdocs’ idea to design a new module for the Master’s programme was strongly supported. From the initial outline of the content to the final didactic design, they were granted complete creative freedom. The intensive support from their supervisors, particularly with regard to bureaucratic hurdles, enabled them to gain valuable experience in academic teaching beyond their research, which is particularly helpful for postdocs in their careers.
