FERN.Lab is a collaborative, cross-disciplinary team within the Section of Remote Sensing and Geoinformatics at the GFZ. We bring together scientists, software developers, and designers to translate cutting-edge earth observation and remote sensing research into real-world impact. Working horizontally and in close collaboration, we focus on making complex satellite data, methods and knowledge accessible and usable—especially for fields shaped by global change, like agriculture, conservation, and infrastructure monitoring.
Our goal is to make remote sensing data “transfer ready”—easy to access, process, and integrate into existing tools and cloud systems. We also place a major emphasis on co-design and stakeholder engagement through capcity building and knowledge transfer. By working side-by-side with Stakeholders from different sectors, we ensure our solutions meet real needs and bridge the gap between research and application. Our projects are diverse, impactful and our team environment reflects this dynamic. We prioritize agile development and open communication supporting each other when problems or difficulties arise.
