Seventeen people of various ages are sitting on benches lining the interior of a small open wooden shelter with a steeply sloping roof. In the centre, on a floor covered with gravel and leaves, stands a low wooden table. Outside, trees and foliage can be seen.

In the age of Artificial Intelligence, computers are consuming more and more energy. The TWIST-Group is working on the solution: The members research tiny magnetic structures that can be used to process information efficiently. They also use their methodological expertise in an interdisciplinary manner, for instance, to discover new materials or to better analyze medical data. Innovation that works: for the environment, industry, and patients.

Strengths of the research environment

  • Taking on responsibility early on
Even as undergraduates, students take on real-world tasks in research, conference organisation, externally funded projects and academic processes.

  • Development at every stage of your career
From undergraduates and PhD students to postdocs, everyone receives targeted support – professionally, personally and with a view to the next steps in their career.

  • A strong culture of feedback and support
Regular review meetings, CV feedback, interview preparation and support with grant applications create reliable development frameworks.

  • Community rather than working in isolation
Even in a field heavily based on theory and simulation, open exchange, shared knowledge and a productive culture of learning from mistakes shape our daily work.

  • International, diverse and inclusive
A diverse team, active inclusion and a strong sense of community make TWIST a research environment characterised by professional excellence and a strong sense of belonging.

Examples

Leadership through creative role reversal
The youngest team members devised a dance routine and then taught it to their most experienced colleagues. A joint "debate" at the end brought different perspectives within the team to life and strengthened mutual respect far beyond traditional teaching formats. The fact that everyone involved is open to such a format is an expression of a culture of trust in action. This shapes both professional and interpersonal interactions within the team and forms the basis for a daily research environment characterised by mutual respect, support and a flat hierarchy.
