Die Aktivität der Gene im menschlichen Genom muss sehr präzise reguliert werden, da die Fehlregulation einzelner Gene schwere Krankheiten verursachen kann - zum Beispiel Krebs. Kleine RNA-Moleküle, sog. microRNAs, sind wichtige Regulatoren der Genaktivität. In dieser Studie (Cell 2007) konnten wir einen neuen Schritt in der Prozessierung dieser microRNAs entdecken sowie einen neuen Mechanismus zu deren Regulation identifizieren. Dies ist ein wichtiger Beitrag, um die Rolle von microRNAs in menschlichen Zellen zu verstehen und diese grundlegenden Erkenntnisse ließen sich bereits auf eine praktische Anwendung zur experimentellen oder therapeutischen Genregulation übertragen (PNAS 2008).
