The Recent History of Infectuous Diseases

The Research Group

There is a consisten development of new germs that lead to as-yet unknown infectuous diseases. Research into infectuous diseases is therefore still confronted with great medical challenges. Due to the continuous development and changes, not only do the foundations and mechanisms of infectuous diseases have a high profile in science, but so does the field of research into infectuous diseases itself.

The Research Group set itself the chronological and quantitative survey of the "recent history" of European research into infectuous diseases as a goal. Especially qualitative studies should contribute to answer the following questions:

more
  • What contributions were made by the single European countries to global research into infectuous diseases?
  • What developments occured in the various areas of research into infectuous diseases, namely bacteriology, mycology, parasitology and virology?
  • How are these contributions perceived in the respective country, and how are they judged by foreign colleagues?
  • How high is the percentage of contributions that specifically cater to academic interests – how high is the percentage of actually usable contributions in the field or on patients?
  • What can be learned from these developments for the future (funding of research, forming of key areas, European cooperations)?

The Research Group published its findings in several publications.

Activities

International Conference

Aside from its studies, the Research Group contributed to the conference "Threat of Infection – Microbes of High Pathogenic Potential – Strategies for Detection, Control and Eradication" in July 2004 in Würzburg.

Publications and Survey

The Research Group published its findings in several papers.
