Tasks and Mission

The Junge Akademie was founded in the year 2000 as an academy for the new generation of scientists and scholars. It is a joint project of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities ( Berlin-Brandenburgische Akademie der Wissenschaften - BBAW) and the National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina (Deutsche Akademie der Naturforscher Leopoldina). Its remit is to promote interdisciplinary discourse and co-operation between outstanding young scientists and scholars, and to support initiatives at the interface between science and society.

The Junge Akademie has a total of fifty members, and ten new members are elected each year. The annual elections are conducted alternately by BBAW and Leopoldina in one year followed by the Junge Akademie in the next. Organisation

The Junge Akademie is independent regarding the contents of its academic activities. Plenary sessions of all the members are held three times a year in order to discuss on-going research activities and joint projects.

During the spring meeting, the members elect a new executive committee and the Chair of the Junge Akademie. The term of office is one year, beginning with the summer meeting.

To promote cooperation between members, interdisciplinary research groups can be proposed and agreed on at plenary sessions. Each group has at least three members including a speaker.
